John of Ávila was born to Alfonso de Ávila, of Jewish converso descent, and Catalina Xixón. He studied law at the University of Salamanca but withdrew in 1517 without a degree. After three years of austere piety, he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Alcalá de Henares under the Dominican Domingo de Soto, earning a bachelor's degree but leaving without a licentiate. He planned to go to Mexico but was persuaded by Archbishop Alonso Manrique de Lara to remain in Seville, where he began writing the Audi, filia in 1527.
